IN RE: EXERCISING THROAT MUSCLES USING A C-PAP DEVICE TO EXERCISE MUSCLES THAT HAVE ATROPHIED. DEAR DR. EDELL, I am looking into the possibility that diabetic weight loss has claimed some very important muscle tissues relating to respiration such as throat muscles, which collapse, requiring a pressurized air device (C-PAP) to force the sluggish tissue open so I can rest at night. Problems with swallowing and slobbering are clearing up as I exercise my upper body, throat and neck.  At this point I want to know what diabetic weight loss actually had to do with my sleep apnea, and whether or not it was neuropathy that caused the apnea. I would also like to know if my dietary supplement, PROTEIN MIX," induced the loss of muscle tissue, as well fat, and whether or not it could have caused the muscle atrophy that resulted in my sleep apnea. What can you tell me?

Thank you for your SharePost. You pose an interesting question.

Sleep apnea associated with an existing condition, such as diabetes, can be complicated. Diabetes is associated with sleep apnea and snoring. However, it's not clear if there is an independent relationship between the two conditions or whether obesity is the only common factor.

For more information, I suggest you send a message to Sleep Disorder Specialist Dr. Allen Blaivas: http://www.healthcentral.com/sleep-disorders/c/68/profiles/. I hope he can shed some light on this for you. Good luck.
