Pediatric OSA Treatment

By Allen Blaivas, M.D., Health Pro Friday, August 01, 2008
  • OSA is not just a disease of overweight adults, it is common in children.
  • Any child that snores on a nightly basis, should have more specific questioning performed (by a doctor) to determine if further testing is necessary.
  • The most common cause of the repetitive breathing obstruction in kids is enlarged tonsils and adenoids.
  • Children with OSA may have behavioral and or growth problems as a sign of the disease, not daytime sleepiness.
  • Adenotonsillectomy is usually the definitive treatment.
  • If more mild disease persists after surgery steroid nasal sprays and monteleukast may be helpful.
  • Occasionally, CPAP may still be required even in children.
