Battling the CPAP

By Leah Sunday, February 17, 2008

Leah here. Again.  I've just spent my third night with my new CPAP and it wasn't pretty...

By three a.m., I had snatched off the headgear, hoping to get a few hours of sleep before church.

My problem all night was that I didn't feel like I could breathe.  The nasal pillow kept moving about when I moved.  Possibly I haven't gotten the straps on the headgear tight enough yet. I'm also thinking that the nasal pillow the tech chose for me may not be large enough.  I will try the larger (small instead of "petite") size tonight and enlist my husband's help with adjusting the headgear.  The other problem I had was that the humidity in the bedroom was low, resulting in a dry mouth and nose.

I AM NOT GIVING UP.  I will struggle and adjust until I get it right.  This is not easy, but it is also not impossible!

If anyone has gone through this ordeal, please give me some insight and support!

(By the way, I have also been diagnosed with dementia...)

You will most definitely stick with it and in the end I bet improve so much in your daily routine.

Thanks, Sue.  Yes, it is I, Leah of the "Leah" blog.  Big Smile

I am happy to announce that this, my fifth night with Mr. CPAP, has proved to be the turning point.  I was able to sleep comfortably for almost seven uninterrupted hours! Big Grin This morning I arose refreshed for the first time in ages.  Hopefully, this will continue!

I appreciate your comments.  I am going to post another time to write about my good night.  Someone sometime in the future may be struggling with their CPAP and I hope my post will encourage them to just get through those early days grappling with their CPAP.

I too have a CPAP for a bed buddy. It took me a cuple of weeks to really get used to wearing the mask. Now, I can't sleep without it. I feel better in the mornings and , after awhile, you should get over the " can't breathe" feeling. Glad it's going well for you , keep on keeping on !!

Thanks for the encouragement.  I look forward to feeling better in the mornings and having more energy throughout the day.  It is getting easier each night to use the CPAP.  I seem to have more problem waiting as the "ramp" increases the air pressure than when the air pressure finally reaches its full capacity.  I will perservere...
