Sleep Disorder

By Patricia Davidson Monday, September 17, 2007

I have been experiencing a sleep disorder for quite some time now and don't know how to eliminate it.  For several years I have had a strong noise and electric burst in my head that wake me up from sound sleep.  Usually only once per episode. At first I was dazed and frightened but since it seemed not to affect me physically or in any way I just went back to sleep and I was fine.  This started happening more frequently and more intensly and I am now having them once or so a week.  Sometimes I get a sort of numbing seizure but quickly come out of it.  It frightens me.  I have a history of anxiety and panic and am on anxiety meds along with blood pressure meds.  I am now calm and rested so I don't know what the problem is.  I don't know if it is due to the meds or caffine or whatever.  Has anyone known of such a disorder?  How do I correct it and is there a remedy?  Hopeful in Florida

Yes I did have this experience about one

year ago and it seems to have gone.  It would happen just as I was going off to

sleep.  It is a frightening experience.  My

Doctor was of no help and so I still don't

know what caused it.  Try using an extra

pillow.

Hi Patricia. My name is MK and I am the producer for this site. Thanks so much for writing.

I am not a health professional, nor have I had any episodes like the ones you have been experiencing, so I cannot answer your question specifically. What I CAN do is ask on of our sleep experts if they have ever heard of this particular problem.

I wonder - are you taking any medicine for your sleep problem? If you are, the noise you are hearing might be a side effect of the meds. Check out our Sleep Disorder Medications page if you think this could be the problem.

I will let you know what I hear from our experts...

Dear Patricia,

Hi, I don't know if this will help you but, a few years ago I  was prescribed the medication Klonopin. I would hear a sound as if someone was slamming a large steel door. I would say to my husband, "Did you hear that" he never did . I eventually stopped taking this medicine. Later my husband was talking to a woman who had the exact same complaint I had. Apparently , it turned out it was a side effect of Klonopin.

Please don't hesitate to be seen by a neurologist for an evaluation - this sounds a lot like what I had and it ended up being complex partial seizures.......

I have been using Trazadone for sleep for over 10 years.  I take 100mg at bedtime.  I have paiin in my head and that's why I don't sleep well.  However, after using trazadone I always fall asleep and have no side effects at all.  I think you have to get it from a Psychiatrist.
