is xanax extended release good medication for chronic insomnia?

I am taking 1 mg of xanax extended release half an hour before going to bed.Can i continue taking this dosage for a long periode of time without knowing any side effect ,cause i suffer from a chronic insomnia.

Thanks for your question.  Here is some information on xanax which is considered a medium to short-acting medication.

 

Benzodiazepines, also referred to as benzodiazepine receptor agonists (BzRAs), were once the most commonly prescribed sedative hypnotics. Originally developed in the 1960s to treat anxiety, these drugs nonselectively target receptor sites in the brain that modulate the effects of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).
