Q: My sleep study showed that I only reached REM sleep one time during the night. How does that effect my health? Besides not sleeping much and being tired all the time.

Pam,

First of all don't panic. The ultimate aim of a night's sleep is to go through as many uninterrupted sleep cycles as possible. At the end of each sleep cycle there is a period of REM sleep. REM sleep becomes more prevalent later in the night. REM is one of 5 cycles of sleep - all of which have a bearing on our health and performance. If you are getting enough deep sleep your health should be OK. REM sleep is however associated with memory, learning and emotional wellbeing. During REM sleep we turn short term memories into long term memories. It also helps us absorb complicated things. It has also been suggested that REM sleep helps us with emotional wellbeing as we play out scenarios in our dreams and formulate reactions. If you (and others) would like to find out more about your own sleep, sleep cycles and why each stage of sleep is relevant please take a look at www.sleepknow.com where they have a sleep test and sleep training programme available to all. All the best.

Thank you for the information.  When I went to the appt. to discuss my sleep study, the Dr. said I had only 1 period of REM sleep during the night and it was only 6 min. long.  I have trouble with memory, emotional problems, and no enery.  I tire out very fast.  My reg. Dr. gave me sleeping pills, but they didn't make me sleep.  Seemed like they really kept me awake.  Not sure what to do now.

It drives me nuts that doctors give out sleeping pills without proper concentration. The issue is they want an easy solution to a problem. Until fairly recently sleep was a mere footnote in medical training and so too many doctors are not well versed in sleep. Be careful about sleeping pills as they can be highly adictive. Check out our website ( http://www.sleepknow.com ) which has lots of good information on how to get better sleep. It will tell you the contributors and barriers to achieveing sufficient good wuality sleep. If you follow all of the advice and things don't improve then try and get a referral to a proper sleep clinic.
