The ideal situation when doing a sleep test (polysomnogram) is to do a full night diagnostic study, and then the patient sees the doctor and discusses the results before deciding on treatment. For sleep apnea, the usual treatment is cpap, which usually requires another sleep study to determine the pressure settings on the machine. However, sometimes due to insurance company requirements or in cases of severe sleep apnea, the diagnostic/cpap titration(adjustment) studies are combined into one study- a split night study.
