Can long term chronic insomnia cause epilepsy?

I'm female, 26years old and have suffered from insomnia for about five years but never let it interfere with my military career. I've tried many remedies from herbal tablets, POM such as diazepam and zopiclone, strict sleep hygiene methods to even booking myself into a sleep clinic; all to no avail.

After a lengthy discussion with my GP, I'd simply resigned myself to the fact that my body just didn't need the average 7hours a night especially as i still performed extremely well in a very robust working environment.

These last six months have been very different though; rather than my typical two hours a night my body has somehow adapted to survive up to four-five days straight with no sleep which then results in what i call my "crash and burn"..........5hours sleep maximum and the whole cycle starts again with little detrimental side effects.....or so i thought.

I'd started sleepwalking, something which I'm certain I've never done before but even so attempted to not let this get in the way by locking doors, windows and as a last resort i even bought a child's bed guard just to prevent me actually getting out of bed.

An incident last month made me realise that actually our bodies can only take so much and i was rushed into hospital after i collapsed at work.

I've no memory of what happened at the time or the following six days. In total i was in hospital for two weeks.

As soon as i became aware/orientated to my surroundings, i was informed that in total i had 6 seizures and was intubated on arrival to the resus room due to being in full epilepticus status. I was also informed by my consultant that it was almost impossible to communicate with me due to very slurred speech and state of confusion.

After a CT scan and EEG were performed i was informed that i have may have epilepsy and for the past four weeks I've currently been taking Epilim 600mg BD until my appointment comes through to see the consultant neurologist.

There is no history of epilepsy within my family and besides the inconvenience of my insomnia i was previously a very fit and healthy young soldier.

Now i fear that not only my military career is at stake but also my civilian job opportunities if i were to be medically discharged as a result of the non definitive diagnosis..................

I've spoken with my GP since the incident who suggested it could have been triggered secondary to the insomnia?................

I'd be more than greatful if anybody was able shed any light on this theory offer any medical based facts linking epilepsy secondary to chronic insomnia??

Thank you for taking your time to read about my situation and any offer of advice or guidance reference this subjecct would be most appreciated.
