dozing off for 1 second as a passenger on a motorcycle

Jo
05/05/08

I love to ride with my  husband on the back of his Harley, but I tend to become drowsy after 45 minutes and I will nod off for 1 second. I try my hardest to keep my eyes alert but they play tricks on me as though my eyes are awake, but suddently my head would nod off for 1 second before I realize that I've nodded off during the ride.  My husband doesn't want to take me riding anymore because it is so dangerous.   I love to ride with him and I'm so devastated and disapointed in myself that I have to give up this passion of riding with him.  The night before the ride, I tend to have anxiety and wake up a few times during my sleep so I don't have a good night's sleep, but even if I did have a good sleep, I still tend to get drowsy during a 1 hour ride.

Please help! I have never been diagnosed with any sleep disorders.  I want my self to stay awake and alert during the ride!!

Hi Jo - thanks so much for posting your question.  I think alot of us drift off a bit when we are a passenger on a plane, train or automobile.  Hopefully not while we are driving!

If you are really concerned maybe a medical evaluation is something to consider.  As well, you can read our content on Narcolepsy or even the basics of understanding sleep.

All the best, sue

As long as you are not driving, sounds good. Do you get at least 8 hours sleep per day? If not e-mail me back and I'll tell you what I do. The vibration of the bike can cause sleepiness because the vibration of the bike, as a rider I do the same as you, I get sleepy so I take a Quick nap. not too long ,then you may have a hard time falling asleep. e-me back at rikster05@comcast.net

                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                Rick

P.S. time for me to go to sleep so I will take what I take and wake up but a bit groggy in the morning for about 1 hour. Happy Mothers day!!!!!!!!!

I have sleep apnea and chronic fatigue and fibro and RA and i LOVE to ride behind hubby...I fall asleep for long periods of time...and hope hubby doesn't sleep also..oh, I forgot we are both near 70 y.o....I can't speak for hubby, but what saves me is arm rests.  We had a Ultra..now We have a Gold Wing...they are like riding in a convertable.  In otherwords i do NOT have a solution but a wing n a prayer and lotsa luck to you.
