when you profile patients who suffer with insomnia you tend to find that these 2 drugs feature prominently in their history of drugs prescribed. Some have found that with ambien they do tend to fall alseep but because its half life is quite short, it clears out quickly (that's actually its plus side for some - no lingering effects in the morning) and if they wake up too early they cannot fall asleep. In that case they switch to Restoril (max dose is 30 mgs.) and it seems to work for them. concerns of addiction or long term use are a problem for some people, so the goal of insomnia treatment should always be using the medications while trying other lifestyle and habit changes that might ultimately help relieve the insomnia and get sleep in place without drugs. The preference seems to be a person by person situation.
