Q: My one year old still wakes in the nights and acts 'scared' when we put her in crib

Hello, our one year old daughter is still getting up in the night.  A little history; she slept through the night at 6-8 weeks (6 hours between feedings) and took great naps.  We had a traumatic experience at 9 months - she broke her wrist and was in a cast for 4 weeks, which was also when she began crawling, so two major things at once.  This is when she began waking in the night again.  For the following three months she woke up in the night anywhere between 2-6 times.  Usually it didn't seem out of hunger, occasional wet diaper to change but would go back down easily once she saw us and we put the binkie back in.  Now she is not getting up near as much but still does - 1-2 times.  I am weaning her from breastfeeding and she seems VERY clingy during the day and fussy.  Oh, she also has an ear infection right now!  But, that doesn't explain the past 3 months?  She is such a good baby otherwise and takes great naps - 1.5-2 hr morning and a 1 hour afternoon and we put her down at 1 p.m. so she's not ruining her bedtime with a late nap (she goes down between 7 and 7:30 for the night).  Any help, advice, etc that you can offer I would appreciate.  I honestly wonder sometimes if this will change?!  I sometimes envision having a 4 year old who still needs to be pacified to sleep, which is NOT what we want.  We want to have a second child but this (I hate to say it) deters me from even considering it, which I know sounds bad, but any parent who has these 'dream' sleepers who sleep 12+ hours a night and never wake up, even when teething, they just don't get it!  I have some of these moms in my playgroup and it drives me crazy to hear their 'perfect' stories and full-nights' sleep.  My mother always says every baby is different, so maybe our second will be a different sleeper.

I feel your pain, my son is now 11 months old and we've been fighting his sleep problems his whole life.  He has "confusional arousals" which are like night terrors..but he also had some behavorial awakenings and we went through a local hospital that had a sleep center - St. Luke's Hospital in St. Louis. You can call and they will do everything with you over the phone, I think it was $125.  They give you step by step instructions.  My son still wakes 2-3 times but it's sooooooooo much better than before we did the sleep training.  And his wakings now are from the terrors, not from him wanting to eat or be picked up.  Actually I rarely have to go in his room but he still wakes me up constantly so i totally know what you're going through. i'm not having anymore kids either. If you ever want to talk/vent my email is sing3216@gmail.com and my name is Laura.  Hope things have gotten better, I just noticed you posted this a long time ago!
