Hi Seawolf:
As far as nightmares, judging by the date after your name, I wonder if you were ever in combat, or have been traumatized. All of us dream when we are asleep, it's just that we don't remember most of them. There are some medications and some drugs that interfere with dreaming, but most do not. Certain foods and beverages will increase dreaming, especially if taken shortly before bedtime. Cheese is famous for causing bizarre dreams, so skip the pizza late at night.
Violent nightmares may be about trauma or fears. Trauma comes in many sizes and shapes for each of us. It could be a car accident, the death of a loved one, or some kind of abuse. In any case, if you think you've experienced something that could be showing up in your dreams, then you might talk with a professional for some help. You can find one in your area at Psychology Today.
Fears that can show up as dreams or nightmares can be driven by either anxiety or depression, that is, a fear of losing one's house because of loss of income.
I hope this helps,
Dr. Diana Walcutt
