I have been on Ambien for about 10 years. Even with this med I have trouble sleeping Perfect example is right now. I took it at 10:30pm and it is now 3:38am. Is there any other meds that I can ask my Dr. about or should I ask him about takeing a higher dose of the Ambien? Only sleeping a few hours a night is getting old real fast and I am getting a little snippy with people during the b/c I am very tired. Any suggestons?

There are other medications available for the treatment of insomnia. Rozerem and Lunesta are alternatives to Ambien and Ambien CR. You can speak with your doctor about trying one of those. If those medications don't work, there are other options, such as trazodone, that are older treatments. The older treatments may come with a higher incidence of side effects, but you may be willing to put up with the side effects if you can get some sleep!

Best of luck,

I dont know anything about that particular sleep medication. But I have learnt a lot about pharmascuticals in general to know that they will never be a cure to the root problem as they only use chemicals to provide a short term hit. They generally treat the symptoms only and they always come with side effects which will eventually compromise your quality of life. You need to redress the balance, not tip it, and feed your body. Your liver will be under a lot of stress if you take anything continuously, including any type of food type. With a problem like yours if it has been going on for a long time will probably be best attacked from all angles. Find out if you are nutrient deficient or have any toxins in your system that need DE toxing. Often there are websites who will offer a hair mineral analysis etc. If you would be open to this idea then maybe it would be worth taking the results to a nutritionalist or homoeopath to see if you have something to work on. Also it may also be an idea to try and find a time scale on when this problem started to see if it is linked with any particular troubled time in your life, and go down that route with imagework or CBT ( cognative behavioural therapy). There are also a lot of relaxation and guided meditation cds you could use. They have helped for my son who is extreemly hyper and has a lot of trouble settleling down. There is also a lot to be said for cranial osteopathy!! Also try to think if there is any other long term physical or mental health issue you may be experiencing, there may be a link! I hope this helps

Drugs are never the solution because they only work the night you take them and come with unpleasant side effects and danger of dependency. For more than 50 years sleep doctors have known about cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) which works with the electrical component in your body to gently and most importantly - safely - re-set your internal sleep clock so that your body will trigger sleep naturally at night and let you sleep through the night. In the US this technology is available in CES Ultra with a prescription and in other part of the world in a device called The Sleep Genie. It's a totally natural approach to correcting sleep problems and the underlying stress.
