Can't move or breathe while sleeping. Help

I feel like I can't move or breathe while I am sleeping. I will be dreaming and feel as if I am under water or in a situation where I can't breath. I know that I am asleep and know that I am dreaming. I try to wake myself up and I just can't. I begin to panic and keep trying to wake up and I know that I am not breathing. I keep trying and then finally I am able to wake up. I wake up very upset and shaking. This scares me greatly because I have other medical problems. I have asthma, I have arthritis, fibermyalgia and neuropathy. I am almost scared to go to sleep, for fear of passing away in my sleep. I tried to have a sleep test done, but I have been fighting with my insurance company over it. I don't know what to do. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

    Thanks for your help,

I am wondering if you don't have Sleep Apnea. I have SA and what happens is you quit breathing while you are asleep. I have many medical problems also, including Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Sjogrens and the list goes on. I would talk with your doctor about referring you to a sleep doctor so they can do some sleep studies on you. Sleep Apnea is very serious and with the medical conditions you have, I wouldn't waste time. I hope that this is helpful for you. Good luck.

Thank you so much for your response. I too have Fibromyalgia as well as Degenerative Arthritis and Neuropathy. So maybe there is a connection. The only problem is, is that my insurance company is hasseling me about having a sleep test done. I had one done, but it came back inconclusive. Yet they rushed for me to have a second done and that is when the insurance company began giving me trouble. I will do as you suggest and speak to my doctor as soon as possible. I know that on occasion I wake up gasping, so there may be something to this. Thank you so much for your assistance.

Did you ever find out what this was? I'm having this problem now. It feels like I am underwater and I cannot breathe. I know I'm sleep and its like I hear water in my ears. I wake up shaking and out of breath. This has happened twice.
