my body stiffens

On some occasions when i go to bed, i can just about feel myself dropping off to sleep then my arms and top of my back stiffen/freezes up and wake me up im not aching anywhere, this can go on for at least an hour before i finally get to sleep.

It's a common complaint that doctors do hear about and it has to do with shifting from one sleep phase to another.  It usually happens when you are awakended suddenly out of a particular phase of sleep rather than moving gradually thru the several cyclical phases of sleep.
