Iam waking up every night, struggling to breath, and coffing with a lot of slime on my chest.  If this happens it usually takes an hour for me just te get to sleep again.  I cant lie down, this is when I cant breath.  I also do have chest pains. (the time it happens)

I am 24 and I smoke, is this maybe why?  It doesnt happen through the day only when I am sleeping?

Hi Alta,

I think you've probably answered your own question. You don't say how much you smoke or what your age is, but I can't help but think smoking is having a significant effect on your breathing. And, I suspect you know the answer is to stop smoking, take some exercise and move towards a healthier lifestyle.

In terms of immediate home remedies it may help for you to use a decongestant. This could be in the form of a linctus or maybe putting your head over a bowl of steaming hot water with an added menthol crystal. Anything that helps to break up your mucus and get it out is a good thing.

You could also try adjusting your sleeping position, but I'm guessing you've probably tried this. However, taking pressure off your chest will help a little.

Have you visited your doctor recently? I would. You may be recommended nicotine patches or some other aids to help with your breathing. Sleep should follow naturally.

Good luck

Oops, I've just seen that you do mention your age, my apologies.
