We’re told over and over to avoid food with preservatives, but a study from the University of Michigan found that the common food preservative nisin might decrease or eliminate tumor growth.
Nisin is an antibacterial agent that preserves food by changing the cell properties in bacteria to make them harmless to humans. So, instead of using the preservative on food, researchers tested the use of the antimicrobial on cancerous tumors.
They found that nisin was successful in halting cancer growth by either slowing the cells’ reproduction or by triggering a protein called CHAC1, which causes the cancerous cells to simply die.
