What Is It?
Infectious mononucleosis, commonly called mononucleosis or "mono," is an illness caused by a viral infection, most often the Epstein-Barr virus. Mononucleosis has been nicknamed the "kissing disease" because Epstein-Barr virus commonly is transmitted in saliva during kissing.
