A new trend in medicine is the use of sleep drugs to enhance
performance rather than address a disorder. Students, workers, and
the U.S. Army are seeking lifestyle benefits from medicines such as
Provigil, which reduces the need to sleep, and gaboxadol, which may
have fewer side effects than current sleep aids. But some doctors
warn of the dangers of encouraging an over-medicated,
over-competitive society.
