Beta blockers may cut post-surgery COPD deaths
A new report suggests that giving COPD patients a beta blocker before surgery may reduce the risk of death. Previously, doctors believed that giving COPD patients beta blockers before surgery could worsen their breathing. But a new study of 3,000 patients found that patients who did not receive beta blockers were twice as likely to die within a month of vascular surgery as those who did. Researchers also found that those who received an intensified dose rather than a low dose were less likely to die in the month immediately after surgery.
