Early data finds no Spiriva, stroke connection
Preliminary data from the UPLIFT clinical trial suggests that there is no link between the Spiriva HandiHaler and stroke risk, researchers say. The study, which included 6,000 patients who suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, did not find that Spiriva increased the risk of stroke when compared to a placebo. Final data on the study is expected in November 2008, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is expected to release its final recommendations on the drug soon after.
