How Men Can Protect Their Skin During Winter

Winter can be hard on your automobile, your heating bill, your furnace, and your skin. While women often settle into a winter skincare regimen with ease, when it comes to knowing how to protect their skin during the winter months most men are clueless.

“The winter season brings challenges for our skin,” says Dr. Anna Guanche, a widely respected board-certified specialist in dermatology, cosmetic dermatology, anti-aging, and beauty. “The heaters are cranking and the moisture in the air is usually low. This leaves our skin dry. Without its proper moisture barrier, the skin can become irritated, inflamed, and even cracked.”

Dr. Guanche understands that most men are not fans of thick creams or any type of lotion that makes their skin look shiny and oily.

“The key is to find a non-greasy, light formulation that goes on easily and does not look greasy or shiny white,” she says.

Dermatologist Dr. Suzanne Friedler agrees that when it comes to knowing about skincare, especially during the harsh winter months, men need all the help they can get.

“Long hot showers and dry air from heaters can cause skin to become dried out, itchy, and uncomfortable,” Dr. Friedler says.

She recommends keeping showers to less than 10 minutes, using lukewarm to warm water instead of hot.

“Men should also moisturize with a rich cream, rather than a lotion, which has higher water content and is less effective,” she says.

Using a humidifier to keep your home’s humidity between 30 and 40 percent can also help.

Here are four ways more ways men can protect their skin during the winter months:

  1. Moisturize — A typical man will shave and shower in the morning and will not think about how much their skin needs to keep moisturized. Immediately after your shower, apply a moisturizing cream to your skin. You can even use one that has sunscreen and get twice the benefit. And if you are working outdoors or participating in sports, you may need to apply it a second time to get the maximum exposure.

  2. Protect your eyes and your lips — Using a quality lip balm during the winter months should be something that every man does on a daily basis. Using a good pair of sunglasses will also protect your eyes, and the delicate skin surrounding them.

  3. Stay hydrated — Be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to ensure your skin stays healthy and hydrated. During the cold weather months, you may be tempted to consume hot coffee and other beverages to stay warm, but do so in moderation. Nothing keeps skin glowing and looking good like old-fashioned water.

  4. Exfoliate — Throughout the winter, men need to understand the importance of removing dead skin cells. There are many excellent facial scrubs that can be used, but it is recommended to find something that contains glycolic acid because that will help remove dead skin cells quickly and easily. You also want to limit exfoliation to one or two times a week to avoid aggravating sensitive skin.

The winter season brings challenges for your skin, but with a little knowledge and effort, you can win the battle and protect it. You will feel healthier and happier knowing you are taking good care of yourself.
