Most everyone is familiar with the BMI Chart, which standard for Body Mass Index, used for calculating ideal weight ranges. The BMI was developed in the 19th century as a formula to give the government a quick and easy way to measure the degree of obesity of the general population.

Another reason is BMI does not indicate level of fatness accurately. A person could have a high BMI but not be overweight or obese; rather the person can be fit with very little fat and high muscle mass.

The bones of African-Americans tend to be dense and so they sink easily in water. On the other hand, the bones of Asians are light and porous so they tend to float. To allow for these differences, healthy African-Americans should have a lower percent body fat than Asians and Caucasians, while Asians should have a higher percent body fat than African-Americans and Caucasians.
