Below are the hearing loss causes given by respondents who participated in the 2014 National Health Interview Survey:
1. Long-term exposure to loud noises, such as power tools, heavy machinery or loud music
2. Brief, loud noises, such as gunfire or explosions
4. Ear infections
5. Injuries to the ears, head or neck
Despite having trouble hearing, less than half of those who complained about hearing loss had seen a doctor or other health professional about the problem in the past five years, according to the survey.
