Bone loss and osteoporosis can be caused by many things like family history, menopause, body type race and other genetic attributes.
We can also acquire it from many types of medical disorders and also from medications known to cause bone loss.
Medical disorders and medications are known as secondary disorders for osteoporosis, so it's very important to know what these are so we can either avoid taking them, if possible, or limit our exposure to them.
Below is a list of some of these medications that can cause bone loss.
This is not a full list, but these are common medications that some patients may be taking.
This medication is primarily used to prevent organ rejection.
Cyclosporine is also used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis.
Cyclosporine is an immunosuppressant, which works by protecting your skin from further damage, in the case of psoriasis and slows your immune system to prevent rejection of newly transplanted organs.
If the patient has rheumatoid arthritis this medication helps to protect affected joints from further destruction.
Heparin is used to prevent and treat blood clots.
If you've had major surgery, with prolonged bed rest, you will probably receive this as a daily injection to prevent blood clots.
Heparin is an anticoagulant that works to prevent clots from forming and can be given intravenously.
It is also used to treat certain lung and heart problems.
Lithium is primarily used in people with Bipolar disorder, major depression, hyperactivity and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Other uses for lithium are bulimia, anorexia, epilepsy, alcoholism, liver and kidney disease and for neutropenia, which is a low white count.
Anti-seizure medications are used to prevent the occurrence of seizures.
Common anti-seizure medications are Tegretol
® and Dilantin
Anti-seizure medications do not cure epilepsy but they can control it to a certain degree.
Methotrexate is used to treat several medical disorders, among them are varying types of cancer, several types of arthritis, psoriasis and it's also used to terminate pregnancy.
® is a form of medroxyprogesterone that helps to regulate ovulation and menstrual cycles.
If you've missed your menstrual cycle or it is irregular, this drug helps to regulate it.
This can also be used to control the growth of the lining of your uterus known as your endometrium.
