AcipHex, Proton Pump Inhibitors and Action Onset
by Todd Eisner Patient Expert1 . How long does AcipHex take to work?
In general, proton pump inhibitors such as Aciphex, Nexium and Prevacid have a later onset of action than H2 blockers such as Zantac and Pepcid. Aciphex, however, has a more rapid onset of action of a few hours, which is comparable to that of the H2 blockers. Aciphex and all of the proton pump inhibitors are not meant to be taken on demand, or on an as-needed basis. The best medication for that still remains the antacids, such as Tums and Mylanta.
