Can Adhd Develop Into A Mental Disorder Such As Schizophrenia?

Although he was never diagnosed as having ADHD by a professional, my husband and I believed that our son had it. He caused many problems for himself as well as others and wound up in jail for attacking his brother with a knife.

While in jail, he was diagnosed as having schizophrenia, which my father had as well.

About 2 years later, after he had been out of prison for about a year, he committed suicide about 2 weeks after my father had died. He was 23 years old.

I now have a 12 yr. old son who I believe has ADD and an 8 yr. old who I'm sure has ADHD. Therefore, I need to know what to be on the lookout for.

Could my son's ADHD have developed into schizophrenia or was I wrong? Is it possible that my son had schizophrenia all along (since childhood) and it didn't manifest itself until he got older?

My 8 year old has spoken about seeing things (e.g. a face in the bathroom and red eyes).

I'm not sure what to make of this.

Please advise me and if possible include some case histories similar to mine.

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral. ADHD and schizophrenia are two separate diagnosis. One does not lead to the other, however, a person may have both conditions, referred to a coexisting or comorbid conditions.

If you feel your sons have ADHD or another mental illness, you should start with your doctor and request a referral to a mental health professional specializing in youth.
