Is Advair Ever Prescribed On A Prn Basis?

Hi Lucy,

No, Advair is what is known as a preventive, or controller, medicine that is used to keep asthma and COPD under control. It only works when you take it, and it can take a few days to reach full effectiveness when you first start taking it.

So, waiting to take it only when you have symptoms, just won't work. It's not how it is designed to be used. Advair is a combination drug that contains an inhaled steroid and a long-acting bronchodilator.

The kind of drugs used on a PRN basis for lung disorders tend to be short-acting bronchodilators.

Talk with your doctor about your treatment options if you don't want to take Advair regularly as prescribed, OK?

To your health,
