I Am Allergic To Aspirin But May Need A Blood Thinner. What Is Safe To Take?

I've had asthma for 65 yrs., 10 yrs. ago had to go to emergency room after using Relafen. I'm also allergic to shellfish and have some environmental allergies. I can use Tylenol safely, but what is available should I develop DVT???

Answer

Hi Barb,

Thank you for your question! There are other options available besides aspirin. Coumadin is an anticoagulant (used to prevent blood from clotting) that is commonly used for DVT prevention. If you should develop a DVT, there are injectable medications, including Lovenox, Arixtra, and heparin that can be used. All of these medications are safe to use in patients who are allergic to aspirin. I hope this helps!

Best of luck,

Casey
