Another Reason You Need the Flu Shot
The flu vaccine reduces the risk for cardiovascular and respiratory problems in people with diabetes, according to a new study. The lead researcher reports that, "The potential impact of influenza vaccine to reduce serious illness and death highlight the importance to renew efforts to ensure that people with diabetes receive the flu vaccine every year."
Dr. Eszter Vamos, a public health researcher at Imperial College London, and his associates analyzed information collected over the course of 7 years. Almost 125,000 people with type 2 diabetes were involved in the study.
Study participants who received the flu vaccine had lower rates of stroke, heart failure, and pneumonia, and a 24% lower risk of death from any cause than those who were not vaccinated against influenza. While it’s possible that individuals who get the flu vaccine each year are healthier in general than those who don’t, it’s widely accepted that people with chronic conditions like diabetes are at greater risk for flu complications.
