Can Antxiety Cause Balance Problems

I've been sick off and on for five years now. I'm a single mother and have been working and taking care of my kids, but my symptoms are dizziness every day and poor balance, along with hot flashes. I feel like I'm going to faint and my legs feel heavy, too. My doctor says I have anxiety but I'm worried it's something else. Can anxiety cause these kinds of issues?

Hello sad eyes!

The answer is yes...anxiety can cause one to feel dizzy as well as the other symptoms you are mentioning. In fact if you do a search on our site for "dizzy" you will find many members who also ask about this symptom as related to their anxiety.

Here is some good information from our site about how stress and anxiety can cause dizziness. They say:

"Yes, episodes of stress can result in feeling lightheaded. There are several ways your body and mind might react to stress to cause the dizzy sensation. During an anxiety or panic attack, a person's heart rate can accelerate and the chest pounding can be very uncomfortable. When this occurs, people commonly become quite scared, causing them to sweat and feel like they might pass out."

Yet you are right that there may be other medical reasons for your symptoms. What has been ruled out at this point? Have you had any tests? Are the symptoms sporadic or consistent? Do they happen when you are feeling anxious?

I would keep a log of your symptoms...when they happen...what exactly you experience and the intensity and duration. There are times when doctors may dismiss a medical issue when it should have been explored. If you are not satisfied with how your doctor is treating this issue, you can always seek out another doctor.

I hope you get to the bottom of this and find out why this is happening and how to control it.

Thank you for your question!
