In a previous post, 12 Apps to Help Children with Autism Develop Social Skills, I focused on apps for younger children. In today's post, we'll look at apps that are more geared toward teens.
Apple based apps
A social script app developed for teens and young adults providing on-the-go help with conversations and can be used at work, school or when talking on the phone. The basic app ($4.99) comes with a communication module; other modules, such as life skills, socialization, coping, communication at work and safety can be added on to the app for an additional price ($4.99 each. It is available for iPhones and iPods.
Functional Communication System
This is a series of videos that use real people going through everyday situations. The videos cost anywhere from $0.99 to $1.99, depending on the module. It is available for Apple products.
Visual Schedule Planner
A scheduling app that allows the user to create a visual schedule. It can also be used to create step-by-step guides for routines, such as daily hygiene. Users can take notes within the app. It also allows for printing out daily schedules.
Hidden Curriculum for Adolescents and Adults
Designed to help teens and adults with autism navigate the "hidden curriculum" which includes unspoken social rules and guidelines. The app has specific information on the hidden curriculum in regards to relationships, workplace, community and handling money. Available for Apple products. The app costs $1.99.
An app to help with social skills for children, teens and young adults. It works on the five R's - Relate, Relax, Regulate, Reason and Recognize. It includes exercises, strategies and information to help your teen navigate social situations. Available for Apple products and costs $39.99
Apps for Android devices
There is a much bigger variety of apps for teens with autism that are available for Apple devices, however, I did find a few apps on Google Play. If you know of additional Android based apps for teens and young adults with autism, please post a comment and share with our readers.
The Planner Guide
An organization system for teens and young adults. It allows the user to use text and age-appropriate graphics to create schedules. There is a reference guide with information on relationships, communication, work, home, stress management and more.
This app is a reference guide to reading and using facial expressions to show emotion. Available on Google Play for $1.52.
An app for non-verbal teens and adults. Users can download pictures from the internet or take their own pictures and use them within the app. It helps develop independence in non-verbal children, teens and adults. It is free at Google Play.
An app to help teens use facial expressions to express their mood as well as recognize facial expressions on others. Available in Google Play for $0.99.
