Whether you are contemplating gastric bypass surgery or whether you have had a weight-loss procedure already, you should be familiar with at least some of the dietary demands for a successful program of long-term weight-loss maintenance following your bariatric surgery. The more knowledge you have about the do’s and don’ts of your post-surgery bariatric diet the better.
Long-term achievement will require a restructuring of eating habits with an emphasis on a high protein, low carbohydrate meal plan.
Following your weight-loss surgery, your doctor and dietician will guide you through your post-operative diet strategy.
The Phases of the Gastric Bypass Diet
There are essentially four phases of diet you must address after your weight-loss procedure: a liquid diet, a diet of pureed foods, a diet of soft solid foods, and a diet of solid foods before settling into a permanent and healthy diet.
Immediately after your bariatric surgery, you will be placed on a liquid diet to measure how well you can tolerate food. Your diet may include soup, unsweetened juice, and sugar-free gelatin. This phase is normally for a few days only.
The second phase will last about 2-4 weeks, and you will be on a diet of pureed foods such as lean ground meats, fish, yogurt, soft fruit and vegetables.
Soft, solid foods will be added in the third phase and will include ground or diced meats, soft fruits, and cooked vegetables, This will continue for about eight weeks.
After about 3-4 months, barring complications, you can resume a normal and healthy diet. The focus of this article will be on low carbohydrate breakfast ideas you can use now that you are eating regularly again.
A Low Carb Diet Plan After Weight-Loss Surgery
High-carbohydrate foods and grains are not a good fit in a program that is meant to lose weight and not regain it.
The staple foods of a low carb diet are plenty of vegetables, a good amount of fresh fruit, chicken, turkey, fish, beef, and eggs. Whereas many people have become habitual about cereals and breads for breakfast, the morning meal will need adjusting.
Low-Carb Breakfast Ideas
Eggs are a great source of protein and are also low in carbohydrates. Omelets or scrambled eggs with cheese and vegetables are good choices.
A protein shake will start the day off nicely. Smoothies taste great and are easy to make. Frozen berries, protein powder, almond milk, ice, and perhaps a bit of banana swirled in a blender. They taste wonderful, too.
Scrambled tofu with peppers, mushrooms, and onion is also a good alternative.
Fish is an equally good option. A nice, light flavored cut with diced tomato will be a pleasant way to start the day.
A Suggestion for a Low Carbohydrate Breakfast Recipe
A low carb breakfast suggestion for a weekend morning (this one takes a bit longer, 15 minutes prep time and twenty minutes in the oven) is egg and pesto stuffed tomatoes. The recipe is borrowed from the Paleo Diet website (paleodietlifestyle.com) with a few modifications of my own.
Follow the recipe as directed or you might wish to add bits of pan cooked turkey bacon on top of the egg as well as a bit of shredded Swiss cheese. Each fork full had a dominant flavor unlike the one that proceeded it. First, the warm flavor of tomato, then a nice bit of pesto. The egg and bacon mix was next, followed by the melted Swiss cheese. This one is a must try. Enjoy.
