On my mind today - medications to take when we get a Migraine. Here’s a short pop quiz for you:
What do you get when you combine 250mg of aspirin, 250mg of acetaminophen, and 65mg of caffeine?
There are several possible correct answers:
- Excedrin Migraine.
- Excedrin Extra Strength
- Equate Migraine Relief (Walmart store brand).
- several other store brand products.
- one aspirin tablet, one acetaminophen tablet, and a cup of coffee.
Today, Bayer HealthCare announced that they’re adding a new product to their line-up that will add yet another answer to that question, Bayer Migraine Formula. In a press release, Bayer describes their new product as:
“an over-the-counter (OTC) medication designed to relieve migraine pain and accompanying symptoms - nausea, phonophobia (sound sensitivity) and photophobia (light sensitivity). The powerful triple action formula of aspirin, acetaminophen and caffeine aims to target and alleviate tough migraine pain fast and effectively.”
For those of you who get relief from this type of product, you can print a trial offer coupon from the main page of the _Bayer Migraine web site _.
Out of respect for those Migraineurs who are helped by such products, I’m trying to curb my lack of enthusiasm and downright cynicism, but I’m not having much success. Yes, Migraineurs who treat successfully with Excedrin Migraine have been horribly impacted by it’s recall. But, it’s due back on the market next month, and there are store brands available. Some of those Migraineurs report that the store brands haven’t been as effective for them as brand name Excedrin Migraine, possibly because of the binders and fillers used in the manufacturing process, but there’s no reason to think that they’ll be any more likely to do well with the Bayer product than the store brands.
Instead of spending the funds to get this OTC approved by the FDA, developing the new packaging, and so on, I would personally have appreciated it more had Bayer spend that money on looking for something different and new instead of simply cloning Excedrin Migraine.
