At The Beginning Of Menopause Do Your Periods Ever Get Closer Together?

Mine seem to be getting closer together over the last couple of years. In fact this last time there were only 19 days in between. Up until now they have been 28 most of my life then as of about 2 yrs. ago they have moved to anywhere from 27 to 24 and as I stated 19 this time. I’m 48yrs old. Is this normal?

Thank you,

Cathy TN

Answer

Yes, Cathy, it is normal. For the matter of fact, it is common when a woman is in perimenopause that her periods may get closer before they begin to get farther apart and then skip months. Bleeding for some women gets heavier, for others lighter. Others may have breakthrough spotting during the cycle. Women may also find they have more cramping and possibly also more clotting. These changes are especially related to the progesterone levels declining as you approach menopause.
