Best Diet For A Leaky Heart Valve And A Narrowed Kidney Artery

My mother has been diagnosed with a leaky heart valve and a kidney artery that is 50 percent closed. She wants to know what would be the best diet for her?

Concerned son.

Hi Ron T.,

Generally for a leaky heart valve, there is no actual diet that treats the problem. Here is some general information about a leaky heart valve that may help clarify. I encourage her to follow a lower sodium diet or eat the food she usually does but not add salt to it. Watching her overall fat intake and cholesterol intake can also help keep her heart healthy but will not reverse or improve her leaky heart valve.

As for her kidneys, it sounds like she has a condition called renal artery stenosis. Her diet will depend on whether the issue has caused kidney failure and to what extent. I encourage her to watch her salt intake for her kidney problem too, but whether she needs to watch other aspect of her diet really depends on the damage done to her kidneys, whether she is hypertensive and her lab/blood work.

Overall, I encourage your mother to try to eat a well balanced diet with lean meats and dairy, a variety of fruits and vegetables and higher fiber whole grains. I encourage her to continue eating the foods she loves, but to limit the amount of salt, sugar and fat added to her food.

Best of luck,
