Three Best Holiday Recipes For Morning Sickness

Both of my boys were born in the spring, which meant that I was still in the throes of morning sickness during the holiday season. If you are suffering morning sickness, you are not alone. According to a 2000 study in The Quarterly Review of Biology, approximately two-thirds of women experience nausea when they are pregnant. If you are facing morning sickness during holiday festivities, the recipes below may help you feel better and enjoy the season.

Gingerbread Cookies

Ginger has been found to reduce nausea, according to a 2015 review of multiple studies, published in Current Opinion in Supportive and Palliative Care. This recipe contains fresh ginger, so you know you are getting the real deal. Decorating gingerbread cookies can also make great activity if you have older children wanting a little special attention.


  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, ground
  • 1 3/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla


In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves until well blended. In another bowl, beat together the butter, brown sugar, and egg until well blended. Add molasses and vanilla, and mix well. Gradually stir in the dry ingredients until smooth. Wrap the dough in plastic and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (to help it roll out easier).

Heat oven to 375 F. Grease a cookie sheet.

Place the refrigerated dough on a lightly floured surface. Sprinkle flour over the dough and a rolling pin. Roll dough into a sheet 1/4 inch thick. Cut out cookies into desired shapes and place on cookie sheet. Bake for 7 to 10 minutes.

Allow to cool. Decorate, or just sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Peppermint Smoothie

Getting extra liquids from foods like smoothies can be helpful if you have not been able to eat very much due to morning sickness. This smoothie also offers a non-alcoholic choice for gatherings so you can enjoy a special drink too. The banana provides potassium, which can help if you are experiencing leg cramps.


  • 1 cup vanilla almond milk
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1/2 cup strawberries
  • 1 drop peppermint oil
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • Coconut whip cream (optional)


On the stovetop, make a simple peppermint syrup by heating the water in a pan. Add sugar and stir to dissolve. Remove from heat. Add the peppermint oil and stir. Set aside.

In a blender, add the milk, banana, and strawberries. Add 1 teaspoon of the peppermint simple syrup. Blend until smooth. Top with coconut whip cream, if desired.

Peanut Butter Dip And Salty Pretzels

The 2000 study in The Quarterly Review of Biology also found that avoiding meats, fish, poultry, and eggs may help reduce morning sickness. In addition, the Mayo Clinic suggests that eating salty foods can relieve symptoms. Try this protein-packed combo for a great snack or party appetizer.

  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • Salty pretzels (gluten-free options are available)


Mix the peanut butter and maple syrup together until well blended. Put in a bowl and use as a dip for your favorite salty pretzels.
