Is A Blood Pressure Of 184/100 An Emergency?

My blood pressure just read 184/100, which is the highest it's ever been. Should I go to the emergency room since my regular doctor's office is closed?

Answer

A blood pressure of 184/100 is cause for concern and you should seek treatment ASAP. Since you posted your question two days ago, I hope you have since see a physician to determine the best treatment for you.

Here is a great source of information: The Basics of High Blood Pressure.

The Joint National Committee defines four blood pressure categories, and your blood pressure falls into this category:

Very High Range - Stage 2 Hypertension
Systolic (top) blood pressure 160 mm Hg or high
Diastolic (bottom) blood pressure 100 mm Hg or higher
If in this range you have hypertension (high blood pressure).
