Do I Have A Blood Pressure Issue?

I have been having bouts with dizziness, excessively tired and ringing in my ears. I took my blood pressure and it was consistently 122/77 three times. My pulse rate was 65. I am 51 years old and 138 pounds, 5'4". Does this constitute low blood pressure symptoms?

Answer

Hi Maureen,

No, I do not believe low blood pressure is the problem, but I do recommend discussing your symptoms with your MD.

Hypotension or low blood pressure is typically when blood pressure drops to 90/60 or below. However, if you have previous heart issues you may have symptoms of low blood pressure at 100/60. The most common symptoms for low blood pressure are lightheadedness and fatigue.

Your symptoms do match what's common for low blood pressure, but a blood pressure of 122/77 is not low. Ideally, blood pressure should be less than 120/80, so if anything your systolic number (top number) is slightly high.

Again, discuss with your doctor to determine the cause of your symptoms.
