I Had A Blood Sugar Reading Of 49 Today. I Still Feel Out Of It. What Can I Do? I Am At Work.

I had the normal Hypoglycemic reaction but have been really sleepy since this event.

Answer

Hi Karen,

This happens to me too. The sleepy feeling following a low blood sugar reaction is similar to the sluggishness people feel after eating a meal with a lot of carbohydrates. Basically, your blood sugar is rising. Even if you don't end up with high blood sugar, the process of rising blood sugar tends to make us tired.

What can you do? Try to get some fresh air, walk around, get something to drink. Realize that this sleepy feeling will pass and test often to make sure your blood sugar hasn't gone too high from when you corrected the low.

Sometimes lows just make us feel out of it for an hour or two. For me, my lows feel more severe if they fall fast, even if the number on the meter isn't super low.

Good luck,

Kelsey
