Brewed Cocoa May Be a Good Coffee Substitute
A recent study looked at the effects of drinking beverages made with brewed cocoa--cacao that has been roasted and ground to be brewed like coffee--and attention, motivation to perform cognitive activities, anxiety, energy, and fatigue. Brewed cocoa, which may have been first created by the ancient Incas, has been recently touted as a "superfood."
For the almost-12-month, double-blind study, participants drank brewed cocoa, cocoa with caffeine, caffeine without cocoa, or a placebo without caffeine or cocoa. After drinking the beverages, the study participants performed tests that evaluated cognitive function and mood.
According to researchers, the study results show the combination of cocoa and caffeine has a positive effect on both cognitive performance and mood. They found that cocoa, which increases cerebral blood flow, improves cognition and attention and lessens the anxiety-producing effects of caffeine. As an added benefit—mocha lattes are delicious!
