Could Caffeine(coffee, tea, chocolate) Cause Breast Discomfort In Only One Breast?

I'm 69, post-menopausal, and am overdue for my mammogram (2.5 years). Could caffeine (coffee, tea, chocolate) cause breast discomfort in only one breast? When I give up caffeine for 5-7 days, it seems to improve. Am I on the right track? Thanks for any input!

Answer

Yes, caffeine can definitely affect a lump in your breast, when it's a fibroadenoma. Caffeine has been shown to have an effect on fibrocystic change, which is a condition that produces lumps in your breasts. If you're worried about a lump (and it sounds like you are) and the lump seems to get larger or smaller from week to week, it's probably not cancer. That said, please have this examined by a doctor, in light of the fact you've missed a couple of mammograms. You can never be too careful, and a mammogram is the best way you have of protecting yourself from breast cancer. Please make that call soon, OK?
