How Much Calcium Can Your Body Absorb At One Time? I've Heard It Can Only Absorb 400mg At Once,is This True?

my dr. told me to take calcium citrate since i take Omneprazole & i want to get my full benefit from my calcium so i need answers please? Do i take 3- 600mg pills daily to get max benefit?

Hi Loretta, welcome. According to many including the National Osteoporosis Foundation, you can only absorb 500-600 mgs at one serving. NOF on calcium. The info on calcium absorption is near the end of the page under the heading Calcium Absorption. They also mention that the total needed, inculding what you get from your diet, is 1,200 milligrams a day, for those over 50. Many Dr's think this is too much, so check to see what your Dr says and how well you absorb calcium. A 24 hour urine calcium test should tell the Dr. how much you are excreting and not utilizing. You may also want to have your blood calcium levels checked too, if you haven't already. You need to calculate your dietary calcium as well to figure your total.
