Can Migraines cause diplopia?

Health Professional

Full Question:

Can migraines cause diplopia?   Are they related to sinus problems at all? Laura.

Dear Laura;

Yes, diplopia can be a Migraine symptom, usually an aura symptom of basilar-type Migraine. You can read more about basilar-type Migraine in _Basilar-Type Migraine - The Basics _.

Many people have pressure and pain in the sinus area during a Migraine. This is because one branch of the trigeminal nerve runs across that area, and the trigeminal nerve becomes inflamed during a Migraine. You can see an illustration of this in _Pathways of Migraine _.

Good luck,
John Claude Krusz and Teri Robert
