Complex carbohydrates from fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes, and whole grains are the healthiest fuel for our bodies, and eating a diet high in carbs is the most effective way to lose weight, suggests a study from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
Study participants were either:
- Placed on a plant-based, high-carbohydrate, low-fat (20 to 30 grams per day) diet with no animal products or added oils or
- Asked to maintain their current diet, including meat and dairy products (control group)
There were no limits on calories or carbs and neither group changed their exercise routines.
At the end of the 16-week study period, body mass index (BMI), weight, fat mass, visceral fat volume, and insulin resistance decreased significantly in the group that ate a plant-based, high-carb, low-fat diet, according to the researchers. There were no measurable changes in these health parameters in the control group.
