Can I Skip My Exam?

It seems the guidelines for many medical tests, procedures, and exams are always changing. It’s no wonder people are frequently confused about which tests they need when, and how often they should have a physical exam.

Some of this confusion actually makes it more important to see your doctor regularly—for example, there may be some diagnostic tests you aren’t aware that you should receive. Your doctor also can help you determine your risk for certain medical problems—an important factor in screening guidelines.

There’s another reason to make and keep that appointment: A face-to-face conversation with your health care provider just may be the best way to stay healthy. Many patients bring up problems they experienced since their last check-up during their yearly exam—problems that didn’t warrant a sick visit, but that might still give important clues to overall health. Communication with your doctor is key.
