Is Cefalexin Safe When Pregnant

i'M TWO MONTHS PREGNANT NOW. i SUFFERED URINARY TRACT INFECTION, THE DOCTOR PRESCRIBED ME TO TAKE IN CEFALEXIN 3X FOR 7 DAYS. IM WORRIED BECAUSE ITS ANTIBIOTIC, IS IT SAFE FOR MY BABY? AND BY THE WAY, IS CEFALEXIN AND CEPHALEXIN THE SAME?

Answer

Cephalexin is in FDA Pregnancy Category B, which means: Studies in animals show no risk to the fetus, and no well-designed studies in people have been done. -; OR -; Studies in animals show a risk to the fetus, but well-designed studies in people do not.

It's important that a urinary tract infection during pregnancy be treated. Leaving it untreated could be more of a risk to your baby than taking the antibiotic. Urinary tract infections are not unusual during pregnancy and treating them with an appropriate antibiotic is considered to be safe for the baby. I couldn't find anything spelled "cefalexin." There is a medication called cefalexina available in some countries (not the U.S.) that contains cephalexin.
