Comparison Of Atenolol And Lisinopril
Can aperson taking atenolol substitute lisinopril if he has run out of atenolol?
Answer
Hi Sandy,
Atenolol is a beta blocker and lisinopril is an ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitor. ACE is involved in a series of conversions that lead to vasoconstriction (narrow blood vessels). ACE inhibits, such as lisinopril, inhibit this conversion process to reduce vasoconstriction. Beta blockers take action within the sympathetic nervous system in conjunction with epinephrine and other hormones involved in the "fight or flight" response to promote blood vessel dilation. Your pharmacist or physician would be good resources to clarify the differences and help you determine the best to treat your situation.
