Answer

Hello,

Alcohol consumption increases the amount of urine in the bladder and dulls the senses such that a person has a reduced urge to void despite the increased volume of urine in his or her bladder -- and this can increase the risk for incontinence and bedwetting. Women have now caught up with men in their alcohol consumption, and health concerns that were initially raised about drinking habits in men now seem to affect women as well.

From what you've shared about your girlfriend, that fact that she "drinks a lot" could be a big factor in her bedwetting, and because she's not dedicated to taking her antidepressant medication as directed, this could be feeding her regular excess use of alcohol -- a "snowball" effect, if you will. It's not uncommon for these issues to be closely linked, often stemming from mental health troubles such as depression.

Two things to try: 1) Encourage her to take her medication religiously, offering your help and full support, and 2) Suggest that she seek assistance for alcohol dependency.

Let us know how things go. Best of luck to both of you.

Sincerely,

Maria
