Concerned About My Tissue Expander That Has Shifted

One of my tissue expanders has shifted to the medial side of my right breast. What causes this to happen? Is it a danger? How soon does it need to be redone?

Answer

It is quite common for an expander to shift, as there is not definitive way to anchor it in one place. One reason why implants or expanders shift is because the pocket it sits in is larger than it is, which is the way it should be in order to feel more natural. There's no need to have it redone, unless it is completely bothersome or your surgeon deems it needs to be replaced or moved. When your surgeon swaps out the expanders for implants, he will likely build "pockets" to help keep the implant in place. You can also try massaging the expander back into place.

Good luck!
